Chapter Sixteen

The following morning, Arthur returned with dark circles under his eyes from a restless night watching over Neil. He walked over to where Gavin sat with the Charm family.

Gavin rose to his feet. “Arthur! What are you doing here? How are you? How is Neil?” he asked while walking toward his friend and embraced him.

Arthur returned the hug. “Hello, exhausted, but there are so many things to take care of here and decisions to make. Neil is stable…for now.”

“Would you like some coffee? Breakfast?”

“Coffee, please.”

“Black. Two creams. Right?”

Arthur nodded. “Could I speak in private with you and Samuel?”

“Sure. Hang on. Lemme get your coffee.” Gavin poured coffee and cream into a fresh mug. “Samuel, could you speak with Arthur and me in your office? He wants some privacy.”

“Sure. I’ll grab a pot of coffee, some food and meet you there,” Samuel said.

“Okay.” Gavin picked up his messenger bag, returned to Arthur and handed over the cup. Leading the way through the halls to Samuel’s office, he offered Arthur one of the chairs and took another for himself.

Entering a few moments later, Samuel carried a small tray filled with coffee, supplies and a few scones. “Thought you might want something to eat. How are you holding up, Arthur?” He set the tray down and settled into his chair.

“Thank you. I do love the scones here.” Arthur cradled a scone in a napkin but picked at one of the scone’s corners and worried it into crumbs.

“It’s okay. You can tell us whatever you need. We’ll figure out something,” Samuel reassured the man. He glanced at Gavin, who nodded for him to continue leading the conversation.

“It isn’t the best of news. His heart is failing faster than expected. Neil needs further care and requires a medical transfer home to get under his cardiologist’s care. The doctors at the clinic agree with the decision. We planned the transfer for Friday. It’s the soonest we could get everything together and he’s not considered critical—not at this point.”

“What about the wedding?”

“While I would rather cancel everything and move the wedding to a different date, Neil doesn’t want that. He wished to marry me before we return home, but he’s unable to leave the hospital. Neil is too weak, recovering from the heart attack and connected to multiple machines. Even with all this, he still insists on marrying me. He doesn’t want to lose a single possible minute of calling me his husband.” Arthur shook his head. Tears glistened in his eyes. He lifted a fresh napkin to soak up the tears. “I can’t believe him…this crazy man of mine. Before he goes in for complex surgery, he wants to marry me. Can you believe him?”

“I believe he loves you so much and wants to take care of you before he can concentrate on himself.”

“I don’t know how we could grant his wish. It’s impossible,” Arthur said.

“Oh, darling Arthur, nothing is impossible with me around. I know our small town and can get everything figured out. I will grant Neil’s wish,” Gavin said and rubbed his hands together.
